Per. 3&4 and Per. 5&6 - Welcome to HAL Science!
HAL stands for Highly Able Learners. HAL Science is the same class as the 8th grade general science class, however, it is structured significantly differently. Students are expected to be self-motivated and able to work on self-paced multiple-day projects. Students are given specific problems and allowed a set period of time to find their own solution to the problem through scientific research and investigation.
Period 1&2: Welcome to 8th Grade General Science!
In this class student learning will focus on the following three "Modules:"
(1) Variations Module - This is the longest module. In this module, students will gain an understanding of variations in biological life forms, what these variations are, and how these variations came to be. The topics studied in this module include: genetics, evolution, geology, and chemistry.
(2) Space Module - This is a favorite module for many students. In this module, students will gain an understanding of the makings of the universe and the laws that govern the universe. The topics studied in this module include: physics, with an emphasis on Newton's Laws.
(3) Energy Module - In this module, students will gain an understanding of the various forms of potential and kinetic energy and the changing of energy from one form to another. The topics studied in this module include: physics, with an emphasis on the Law of Conservation of Energy.
